Girls Cobras survive scares, move to 12-0

This event always has special meaning to Grimes head coach Jamie Evans, who was diagnosed with esophageal cancer nearly two years ago and underwent surgery in June 2008 to have 70 percent of his esophagus removed.

To this point, Evans has remained cured, and his Grimes team is poised for another title run -- as it showed to Hannibal by taking a 41-11 halftime lead.

Mike Stone had 22 points before sitting out most of the second half. As Kucjok Ater added 10 points. Tavon Moore had nine points as Mike Sugamosto and Elias Hibbard earned eight points apiece. Casey Evans had six points.

Earlier that day, Marcellus beat Skaneateles 63-56 in double overtime, and the Lakers dropped out of the first-place tie it had with Grimes and Westhill atop the OHSL Liberty division.

The league title could hinge on the Feb. 12 regular-season finale between Grimes and Westhill - so long as the Cobras get through games against Skaneateles, Marcellus and Phoenix first. The Grimes girls team will play Pulaski and Weedsport before its own Coaches vs. Cancer game against Fabius-Pompey Saturday at 5:30.
