Deputy Discovers Inmate Attempting Suicide

Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin E. Walsh reports that a Custody Deputy working at the Onondaga County Justice Center discovered an inmate attempting suicide.

Just before 7 p.m. last night, Sheriff's Deputy James Carsten was conducting a pod tour when he discovered an

inmate in his cell with a bed sheet tied around his neck. Deputy Carsten immediately radioed for assistance and

the inmate was freed from the bed sheet.

Justice Center medical staff along with Rural Metro Ambulance and the Syracuse Fire Department responded

and the inmate was transported to University Hospital. The inmate, whose identity will not be released in

accordance with confidentiality requirements of Mental Health Laws, is currently in critical condition.

Sheriff's Detectives will conduct a routine investigation of the attempted suicide and have already notified the

New York State Commission of Corrections who will also review the incident.
