Volleyball rivals Christian Brothers and Jamesville-DeWItt would gather on Friday afternoon as part of the week-long set of athletic contests between, and among, the two neighboring schools.
And the Brothers would come out on top, beating the Red Rams in four games. CBA won the first game 25-17, only to have J-D answer by claiming the second game 25-20.
In the pivotal third game, it went beyond the wire, but when the Brothers won it 26-24, it seemed to carry over into the fourth game, where CBA clinched it 25-17.
Alex Horowitch put together 28 assists, feeding it to a front line where Maggie Fennell had nine kills, Kara Modliszewski got seven kills and Jesse Bongiovanni had six kills and four aces. J-D saw Alyssa Miller earn 13 assists and five kills, while Ally Loewy got six kills and four aces, and Jessica Butler picked up six blocks, five aces and three kills.
Earlier in the week, CBA (10-2) had battled to a three-game win over Mexico by scores of 25-20, 25-19 and 25-16.
Horowitch finished with 18 assists, her passes going to a front line where Fennell had seven kills, two blocks and four aces, while Bongiovanni had six kills and Modliszewski finished with five kills.
CBA also beat Blessed Virgin Mary 25-17, 25-9, 25-16, giving some reserves a chance to shine as Claire Gollegly earned 10 assists, two aces and two kills. Fennell still had six aces, though, and Bongiovanni earned seven kills and six aces. Horowitch picked up eight assists.
Three nights earlier, J-D ran right into East Syracuse-Minoa on Tuesday night, unable to grab a game as the Spartans prevailed in a 25-22, 25-10, 25-21 sweep.
Up front, ESM had Mallory Martino earn nine kills and Charlotte Visser seven kills, while Paige Holt gained 17 assists and Norlene Remoliata earned five aces. J-D had Ally Loewy pick up seven kills as Alyssa Miller earned 12 assists and four kills.
ESM (7-6) then lost a four-game decision to Fulton on Friday, a match where the Spartans lost the first two games 25-14 and 25-19, then picked up the third game 25-21 before the Red Raiders closed it out, 25-21, in the fourth. Visser had 11 kills, with Martino adding eight kills and Danielle Steigerwald getting seven kills. Holt had 25 assists.
