The planned bonfire at the Tioughnioga Winter Carnival on Saturday evening will be dedicated to the victims of the Haiti earthquake. The bonfire is scheduled to take place at 6:00 p.m. on the DeRuyter Central School grounds. A moment of silence will be observed to reflect on the events of the past few days.
Three members of the DeRuyter community were in Haiti as missionaries when the earthquake struck earlier this week. After countless hours with no word from the delegation, word came early Thursday morning that they are alright.
The DeRuyter area is hosting a Winter Carnival this weekend. The bon fire was a planned event prior to the free community dance featuring the band Sundown held in the school gymnasium.
"This week has been an emotional one for our tight-knit community", said Town Supervisor Dan Degear. "We are thankful that Linda, Andy, and Vern are okay, we still need to keep the people of Haiti in our thoughts and prayers and look forward to the safe return of our friends."
There will be donation cans for the earthquake victims at carnival events throughout the weekend. The carnival will run from January 14-17, details can be found at cnywintercarnival.com.
