Liverpool High School will host a volleyball tournament to benefit the local chapter of the American Red Cross on Thursday, March 4, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Refuge Student Center, located in the Northside Baptist Church on Route 57 (across from K-Mart at Seneca Mall).
LHS special education teacher Kate Caveny said that students and staff members recently came together to brainstorm ideas for a community outreach event that could involve as many students and staff members from the entire LHS community.
Students between grades ninth and twelfth grade were interested in helping and decided to raise money for the local chapter of the American Red Cross through a volleyball tournament.
"We thought this would be a nice way to welcome the new Red Cross facility to Liverpool," Caveny said.
The team admission fee is $20 and members can be any combination of LHS students and staff. Teams also can purchase a T-shirt with logo for $6 or a T-shirt with logo and team name for $8. There will be a cash prize for the winning team.
"It is a unique opportunity for our students and staff to interact outside of the classroom in a fun, safe environment," Caveny said. "Everyone participating can feel proud of the contribution they are making to a very worthy organization, the Red Cross."
"It is the first of hopefully a series of 'Who Cares? We Care!' events that LHS will hold to raise awareness and money for local non-profit organizations," Caveny said.
