Continental Beauty School opens in Mattydale

Largest cosmetology school in state opens sixth location

Riding on the tradition of a family-owned business model, Continental Beauty School has established its sixth New York location in the town of Salina, with the idea of becoming a part of the community.

The schools have been around for almost 50 years in Batavia, Buffalo, Rochester, Olean, West Seneca, and most recently the Syracuse location, 2803 Brewerton Road, Mattydale.

New to the beauty industry, Syracuse Continental Director Renee Moonan, said she was excited to come aboard with a business that had long-running success. Moonan, of Liverpool, grew up in North Syracuse and owned her own business in marketing and advertising before joining Continental.

"I was just elated," Moonan said. "I love beauty."

This opportunity was a good match with her business background and interest in beauty, Moonan said.

Being a mother of two sons, Shawn and Riley, Moonan said she is able to be involved with some "girly things" as the director for the Syracuse location.

The Syracuse location was a $1 million dollar investment for the chain, said Continental corporate director Geer.

This new location is equipped with several classrooms, and other rooms for waxing, microdermabrasion and nails.

"In this economic climate, for them to take a risk shows their confidence and strategy for the schools," said Lorna Geer, Continental corporate director of admissions and training.

Moonan said the school's location in the well-known Mattydale plaza will bring industry to several local businesses when students take breaks or make purchases while at school.

The school is hosting an open house Monday Feb. 22 for invited salon representatives and other business acquaintances in the area.

Educational experience

Students that attend Continental have received individual consultations from admissions representatives to discuss full-time and part-time opportunities and financial aid possibilities.

As a part of the students' educational costs, they will receive supplies such as a pair of sheers, a Marcel curling iron, flat iron and blow dryer.
