Assemblyman Stirpe announces collegiate scholarships

Awards to be presented at Italian-American State Legislator's conference

Assemblyman Al Stirpe (D-North Syracuse) announced that the New York Conference of Italian-American State Legislators is now accepting applications for four $1,500 college scholarships.

The scholarships will be awarded in June at the Italian-American State Legislators' annual conference weekend. As a member of the conference, Stirpe, is entitled to nominate two students for the awards, one student for academic excellence and one student for athletic achievement.

"When it comes to the cost of a college education, parents and students know that every penny counts and every dollar must be stretched," Stirpe said. "Scholarship programs like these are what make attending college a more affordable and attainable goal for every Central New York student."

Stirpe said the conference will be awarding the four scholarships to current or future college students from state of New York.

The conference will be awarding two scholarships for academic achievement and two scholarships for athletics.

Eligibility will be based on the student's grade point average, interest in pursuing higher education, involvement in the local community and financial need.

Local students may request an application by contacting Stirpe's office by phone at 452-1115 or by email at stirpea@assembly.state.ny.us.

The deadline for submitting applications is 5 p.m. Friday April 9.
