Roche takes diving title at sectional meet

With lots of depth on hand, the Liverpool boys swim team would claim a third-place finish during last Thursday's Section III Class A championship meet at Nottingham High School.

Overall, the Warriors had 275.5 points, a number only bettered by West Genesee (323 points) and Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA (293 points), despite the fact that Liverpool won only one individual event.

That came in diving, where Tim Roche would prevail. His total of 420.70 points beat Rome Free Academy's Nick Brement (403.55 points) and the rest of the field, earning him a trip to the Feb. 26-27 state meet at Erie Community College in Buffalo.

Liverpool's high finishes included the 200-yard medley relay, where Alex Coleman-Gridley, Jake Burns, Cory Sparo and Kenny Byers took third place in a time of 1:43.54. Myers, Phil MacLeod, Alex Perfitt and Joe Hens were fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:32.33 as, in the 400-meter freestyle relay, Spado, Hens, Perfitt and MacLeod were third in 3:26.63.

Spado, on his own, just missed meeting the state qualifying mark in the 100 butterfly as he finished fourth in 55.08 seconds as Joe Hens (58.66 seconds) was ninth. Alex Perfitt was sixth in the 100-yard backstroke (58.65 seconds) and seventh in the 100-yard freestyle (50.54 seconds).

Shane Donovan was fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:05.10), ahead of Coleman-Gridley (10th) and Tom Schmid (12th), as Burns was seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.52. Donovan also took ninth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.63), with Byers taking 10th in the 50-yard freestyle (23.52 seconds). Coleman-Gridley swam to ninth in the 100-yard backstroke.

Cicero-North Syracuse's Billy Werksman earned fourth place in diving with 332.30 points, and he combined with Ben Mozo, Tyler Sager and Tom McAndrew to grab ninth place in the 200 medley relay in 1:57.29.

When it came to the overall sectional meet on Saturday, Liverpool claimed fifth place, with 198 points, as West Genesee (290 points) again reached the top spot.
