Girls track teams run at sectional meet

Each of the area's girls indoor track and field teams would take shots at glory during Wednesday night's Section III championship meet at Syracuse University's Manley Field House.

Of them, Vernon Verona Sherrill had the best team showing, with 29 points for fifth place in a 12-team Class A field, even if it was far from Jamesville-DeWitt's top score of 159 points. Oneida was seventh, with 15 points, and Chittenango had seven points.

The Red Devils' Jenna Fiacco finished second in the shot put, tossing it 29 feet 9 1/2 inches, though it was well off the winning throw of 34 feet 6 inches by J-D's Marae Tearney.

Also for VVS, McKenna Novak had a third-place time of 10.16 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles, while Elaine Slaven cleared 4 feet 8 inches for third place in the high jump.

Allison Lasnicki, again, dominated on the oval with two victories in distance events. Lasnicki tore to a time of 4:56.24 to win the 1,500-meter run, and would need 10:29.50 to pull away in the 3,000-meter run as no other competitor could break the 11-minute mark. Marissa Williams was fifth in 11:57.32.
