Picking up all kinds of extra momentum for the Section III Class B playoffs, the Solvay girls volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit in games last Monday night to beat defending sectional champion Cazenovia in five.
The Bearcats, who lost at Cazenovia on Jan. 5, looked to be heading toward the same fate in the rematch when the Lakers took the first two games by scores of 25-19 and 25-12.
But when Solvay took the third game 25-19, it began to claim control, and it followed up by also winning the fourth game 25-20. And in the decisive fifth game, the Bearcats kept its poise, earned all the key points and won 25-21 to complete its comeback.
Bre Lioto had 12 kills, while Shannon Slowik and Cassidy Tanzella finished with six kills apiece. Feeding them, Calla Bakowski had 26 assists, plus three kills and two blocks. Cazenovia saw Chelsea Lauria pick up 19 assists and Lizzy Reed earn 15 kills.
As this went on, Marcellus would sweep through Jordan-Elbridge 25-10, 25-8, 25-8. On the back line, Samantha Vulcano led the Mustangs with 15 assists, adding five aces as Devan Landers (seven kills, five blocks) and Nicole Fletcher (five kills, four aces) worked at the net. Becca Eddy had five kills and nine assists.
