Winter storms hurt blood drive numbers

Early December winter storms in Western and Central New York caused a number of blood drive cancellations and fewer people keeping their appointments. As a result, The Red Cross has experienced a decrease in the local blood supply, especially type O-negative blood.

The New York - Penn Region lost over 500 donations initially due to blood drive cancellations, which has contributed to this low inventory level. The Red Cross expected to lose up to another 900 donations by the end of the Dec. 10 through 12 weekend.

All blood types are needed, especially type O negative.

Type O negative blood donors are encouraged to donate blood as soon as possible.

Those who already have an appointment to donate blood, it is important that they keep the commitment to give blood, assuming it is safe to travel.

To donate, contact 1-800-733-2767 or visit madisononeidaredcross.org. For donor eligibility questions, call 1-800-215-1659.
