While eliminating the local police department is being considered in many local municipalities as a cost-saving measure, this is not the case in DeWitt. Conway argued the timing to cut back on law enforcement services is poor pointing to recent trends.Although the increase in percentage of crimes won't be available until year's end, within the last month the town of DeWitt is already 3,000 calls ahead of where it was at this time last year. As far as funding goes, the department costs less to operate than either the DeWitt and Jamesville fire departments.
"If you want to look at just dollars and cents, I think we make a very good argument that we're providing the best service at the lowest possible cost," Conway added. "If you want to look at the issue of safety, then I really think we make a strong case as to being equipped to respond and giving more of that personal attention to a case in DeWitt than if you were to merge with a larger department."
