Between noon and 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, sheriff's deputies will man a fitting station at the Dewitt Fire Station, 4500 E. Genesee St., so they can inspect or properly install car safety seats. The program is available to anyone with a car safety seat and deputies encourage parents to take advantage of the free service. No appointment is needed.
Studies have indicated that at least 80 percent of child safety seats used in the US are improperly installed or misused. New York state requires that anyone under the age of 4 be restrained in a federally-approved child safety seat. Additionally, NYS requires that all children between the ages of 4 and 8 must ride in a child restraint system.
