Manlius Pebble Hill School's 7th annual Jazz Fest will be held Sunday May 16 in the school's Coville Theater. Headlining "Jazz Vest VII: Encore" are special guest artists Andrew Carroll and Greg Evans and Friends, The Young Lions of Central New York and MPH student jazz ensembles.
The two-hour jazz extravaganza, open to the public, gets underway at 3 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person/$15 per student and can be purchased in advance by calling 446-2452, ext. 120.
The event marks the return of 2005 MPH graduate Andrew Carroll, award-winning jazz pianist and combo leader. While at MPH, Carroll earned a spot in the 2005 Gibson-Baldwin GRAMMY Jazz Ensembles and numerous music awards, including a 2005 Downbeat magazine Student Music Award as instrumental jazz soloist. After graduating from MPH, Carroll enrolled in the Jazz Studies Program at the University of Southern California and is now continuing his study of jazz piano at the University of North Texas. He has appeared in major jazz festivals and conferences throughout the country and has worked as a soloist, an accompanist to vocalists, and a teacher of young jazz students.
Syracuse native and jazz drummer Greg Evans returns to play with Carroll at Jazz Fest VII. Accomplished in many areas of the music industry, Evans can be heard on studio recordings, at live clubs, jazz festivals, and other venues. He has shared the stage with artists including Jonathan Batiste, Terence Blanchard, Chick Corea, Kurt Elling, and Eric Marienthal. He is co-founder of Remington Rock Camp and co-owner of Blue Collar Music. Having earned a bachelor's of music from the prestigious Manhattan School of Music, he is currently a master's of music candidate at Ithaca College.
The 15 members of this year's Young Lions of Central New York were selected as some of the area's most gifted young musicians. They attend eight different Central New York high schools. The Young Lions of Central New York is directed by MPH music teacher Joe Colombo, 2009 Central New York Jazz Educator of the Year.
