Though it had to wait until the last girls relay event, the West Genesee track and field teams did pull off a pair of wins over Central Square in last Tuesday’s winter-like conditions.
The girls Wildcats’ 72-69 victory over the Wildcats hung on the 4×400 relay, the last event on the track. Kelly Powell, Paige Copeland, Alyssa Zeman and Katie Bott worked together to win the race in a time of 4:25.6.
Already in the meet, Bott had won the 400-meter dash (1:01.6) and tore to first place in the 200-meter dash in 27.2 seconds. Powell chipped in by going 800 meters in 2:35.5 to win that event, while Copeland claimed the 400-meter hurdles in 1:14.5.
Laura Leff swept the distance races, as the eighth-grader ran 1,500 meters in 5:20.6, took first in the 3,000-meter run (10:53.5) and helped Zeman, Powell and Abby Kastick take the 4×800 relay in 10:53.5.
In the 4×100, Bott, Copeland, Brianna McGraw and Kate Corbett prevailed in 53.8 seconds, completing the relay sweep. Central Square won every field event except the pole vault, where WG’s Allie Miedaner cleared 7 feet.
The boys meet was not as close, with WG handling Central Square 96-45. It included Matt Ulrich taking the 110 high hurdles (15.3 seconds) and 400 hurdles (1:02.7), while Jake Lafaver won the 200-meter dash (23.1 seconds) and claimed the 400-meter dash in 52.9 seconds.
Steve Houghmaster, who won the 3,200-meter run (9:25.8), teamed with John Delallo, Matt Gonnella and Matt Serrao as the Wildcats won the 4×800 in 9:01.3. Delallo was victorious in the mile in 4:43.4 as Sam Reedy sped to victory in the 800 in 2:00.4 and Jeremy Cantello cleared 10 feet 6 inches in the pole vault.
Sean Howard needed 11.4 seconds to prevail in the 100 before helping Kesean Sparks, Luke Potash and Zander Petosa win the 4×100 (46.6 seconds). To complete the relay sweep, Delallo, Jake Lafaver, Zach Lafaver and John Alden claimed the 4×400 in 3:43.1.
