Celebrate mom with 'Mighty Queens' author

In 1968, the Friends of Seymour Library was formed to support Auburn's Seymour Library.

Now, in 2010, after being reorganized last year, the friends organization is the center of attention for an upcoming event with author, columnist and National Public Radio host Amy Dickinson.

The Friends of Seymour Library will present a tea and Mother's Day celebration at 2 p.m. Saturday May 8 at Springside Inn in Auburn and proceeds will go to the friends group.

"The goal of the group is to support the library's functions, promote reading, assist through fundraising and enhance the community's appreciation of the library," said Laura Ponticello of Laura's List: Books for Women, which is sponsoring the event with Creekside Books and Coffee.

The Mother's Day weekend event came together when Friends of Seymour Public Library officer and board member Suzanne Klink approached Laura's List about being involved in the tea.

"It was a natural fit," Ponticello said.

The afternoon tea will feature Dickinson, author of "The Mighty Queens of Freeville: a Mother, a Daughter, and the Town that Raised Them," a New York Times bestselling memoir. Books will be available for purchase at the event and there will be a book signing after the author's speech. Creekside Books and Coffee will host the book signing portion of the event.

"Amy [will] highlight her own story of being a mother, as well as the theme of her book of second chances, just released in paperback," Ponticello said.

Slated to be a formal tea, the event will include an assortment of tea sandwiches and tea samplings. Anyone who wishes to attend is invited.

"[It will be a] fun, inspirational event that raises money for our public library system and great opportunity to celebrate a special woman in your life -- mother, sister, niece, daughter, friend," Ponticello said.

Tickets are available for $25 each or two for $45 and can be purchased from Creekside Books and Coffee or Seymour Public Library. For more information, log onto seymourlibrary.com.
