B'ville: Paper cranes, a symbol of peace

Missy Shipman strings up paper cranes with her son, Matthew, at McNamara Elementary School. Shipman has been visiting teacher Sue Allen's third-grade class to help students make 1,000 paper cranes to send to military personnel. The paper crane became a symbol of international peace when a young victim of the Hiroshima bombing in Japan folded 1,000 paper cranes before she died from the effects of the bombing. McNamara third-graders recently studied Japan in their social studies classes.
