Skeletal remains found in City of Oneida

Skeletal remains were found shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon on the north side of Canal Road in the City of Oneida.

Investigators are working this morning to determine whether the remains are in fact human.

A skull and part of a bone were found yesterday by a woman fishing along the Old Erie Canal.

Oneida Police Chief David Meeker says it is too soon to determine whether the remains might be that of Christine Markey, a young woman who went missing in 1993.

Markey was last seen in Jan. of 1993 at her Elizabeth Street apartment. Her disappearance was ruled suspicious, given that all of her belongings were left behind. It is reported that she had been in an argument with her girlfriend, Tracy Taber just before her disappearance.

Investigators are currently working with the Onondaga County Medical Examiners office and a forensic anthropologist at the scene. Chief Meeker is expected to release a statement regarding the findings this afternoon.
