Even as the indoor track and field format shifted from team relays to individual competitions, the result – a big victory by the Cazenovia Lakers – did not change one bit. Again, the Lakers proved too much for its opposition during Wednesday’s John DiMao Memorial Invitational at Colgate University, earning 112.33 points to outlast Clinton (87 points) and the rest of the 14-team field. High placements by Cazenovia athletes dotted most of the events – including the 4×800 relay, where Hollie Marcelle, Emma Wolsey, Margaret Wolsey and Alex Dolbear finished in 10:58.57, the only sub-11 minute clocking as Jamesville-DeWitt (11:15.63) settled for the runner-up spot. Marcelle, on her own, won the 1,500-meter run in 5:12.27 as Margaret Wolsey took sixth place, while Jeannette Cudney stepped up and won the 1,000-meter run, edging Sherburne-Earlville’s Sofeia Eddy, 3:29.09 to 3:29.58. Caroline Marshall (3:31.65) was fourth in the 1,000 as Cudney added her own fourth-place finish in the 600-meter run. Elsewhere on the track, Jillian Vogl dominated the 300-meter dash, winning in 42.89 seconds as no one else even broke 44 seconds. Vogl also was second (7.81 seconds) to Utica Proctor’s Shykiera Hayward (7.77 seconds) in the 55-meter dash, while Paige Biviano powered her way to second place in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.38 seconds. In the 4×200 relay, Vogl, Audrey Bowers, Piper Gianforte and Jackie O’Sullivan finished second in 1:55.20, just behind Rome Free Academy (1:54.71), as the Lakers also took fourth place (4:53.42) in the 4×400 relay. Moving to field events, Gianforte cleared 8 feet in the pole vault for yet another second-place effort as Michelle McGinnis took fifth place. Laura Fitch was fourth in the high jump (4 feet 10 inches), with Biviano in sixth after her third-place long jump of 14 feet 3 1/2 inches. Grace Eberle landed in second place in the weight throw, going 27 feet 5 1/2 inches as she added a sixth in the shot put behind teammates Molly Woodworth (fourth) and Christie Tainter (fifth). Vernon-Verona-Sherrill and Oneida each had 19 points. Most of the Red Devils’ points came in the shot put, where Jenna Fiacco was second (28 feet 4 1/2 inches) and Sam Netzband was third with 27 feet 5 inches. Oneida’s Sara Rifendifer rose to second place in the 600 in 1:49.67 as Kim DeCarr was third in the 1,000 in 3:31.37. In the boys portion of the DiMao Invitational, Cazenovia finished fifth, with 33 points, as Chittenango tied for sixth with 29 points. Oneida was 11th with 22 points as Utica Proctor (84 points) claimed the top spot. The Lakers saw its 4×200 relay team of Forest Blanchard, Tom Mackowiak, Dylan Muller and Conner Polsin finish second, edged by New Hartford, 1:42.78 to the Spartans’ 1:42.54. Chittenango’s Josiah Durfee won the mile in 4:35.53, ahead of, among others, Cazenovia’s Pat Dermody, who took third place in 4:39.18. Dermody added a fourth (2:50.45) in the 1,000, ahead of Josiah Durfee and John Durfee, who were fifth and sixth, respectively. The Bears’ Jason Given landed in second place in the 600 in 1:33.41 as Oneida’s Ben Adams (1:35.59) was third and Cazenovia’s Noah Shephard took fifth place. Chittenango added a third in the 4×800 (9:28.02) and fifth in the 4×400 (4:01.50). In field events, Oneida’s Jimmy Moyer was second in the high jump, clearing 5 feet 8 inches, with Cazenovia’s Blanchard (5 feet 6 inches) in the third place. Also for the Indians, Dan Margo got third place in the shot put, tossing it 45 feet 2 inches. The Lakers saw Muller rise to fourth place in the pole vault (10 feet) and fifth in the triple jump as Tyler Gladle got sixth place in the weight throw.
