Though it had to go deep into the night, the Christian Brothers Academy girls volleyball team survived a battle with Homer on Monday, beating the Trojans in five sets. The Brothers claimed the opener 25-20 and nearly went further ahead, only to see Homer pull out the second set by a slim 25-23 margin. In the third set, CBA seemed to retake control, winning it 25-19, but the Trojans rolled through the fourth set, 25-16, setting up a fifth-set classic. Both teams had multiple chances to win the match – and both could not move out in front. Not until it was 28-28 did CBA move ahead for good, earning the match point and taking it 30-28. On the back line, Claire Gollegly earned 19 assists, adding five kills and four digs, while Kelly Bewley finished with 18 assists. Alexis Koval played superb defense, earning 16 digs as, on the front line, Ivanka Tamnycky had 13 kills and Kara Modliszewski added 10 kills. Sophie Racciati had five kills, two aces and two blocks as Jasmine Harrell picked up nine digs and four kills. In defeat, Homer’s Alysha Camp had 13 kills and 11 digs, helped by Katie Sinclair (also 13 kills) and Lauren Smith (nine kills) on the front line as Taryn Heath finished with 39 assists. On the same night, East Syracuse-Minoa lost in four sets to Cortland. The Purple Tigers won the first two sets 25-17 and 25-20, only to see the Spartans claim the third set 25-21 to keep the match going. Cortland closed it out, though, 25-16 in the fourth set as ESM’s Danielle Steigerwald had seven kills, with Laura Adams (six kills) and Charlotte Visser (five kills, four blocks, three aces) close behind. Kaitlyn Shaughnessy (12 assists) and Paige Holt (seven assists) worked on the back line as Jenna Gregory (29 assists) and Kaylee Gebhardt (eight kills, 24 digs) led the Purple Tigers along.
