Weeks of hallway practices ended for the Cazenovia girls indoor track and field team as it went to Colgate University last Friday night for its first Mohawk Valley Indoor Track Association meet of the 2010-11 season. And the Lakers wasted little time going to the front, earning 90 points to easily claim first place. Clinton was second with 59 points, edging out New Hartford and Rome Free Academy for the runner-up spot. Paige Biviano again had a starring role, as she won the individual 55-meter hurdles in 9.63 seconds and, with Beth Marcelle, won with 20.84 seconds. She and Laura Fitch helped Cazenovia take second in the high jump with 9 feet 4 inches. On the oval, the Lakers swept the three relays. Hollie Marcelle, Margaret Wolsey, Caroline Marshall and Emma Wolsey combined to take the 4×800 in 10:38.19, more than 12 seconds better than runner-up New Hartford. Ashley Winn, Audrey Bowers, Jillian Vogl and Isabel Stockmar sped through the 4×200 relay in a top time of 1:54.27, beating New Hartford by 4.66 seconds, and in the 4×400 Winn, Marcelle, Jackie O’Sullivan and Emmajean Spear held off Clinton, 4:28.87 to 4:29.11, to win that event, too. Christie Tainter and Grace Eberle went 1-2 in the shot put, their throws adding up to 51 feet 6 1/4 inches, and they teamed for second place in the weight throw, too. Piper Gianforte and Michelle McGinnis combined to clear 14 feet in the pole vault, the same total as Clinton. The Lakers took third in the high jump as Bowers had the top individual leap of 13 feet 9 1/4 inches. Jeannette Cudney led the Lakers to a second in the 1,500-meter relay (four times of 23:00.54). Elsewhere on the girls side, Vernon-Verona-Sherrill was sixth with 17 points, just ahead of Oneida (14 points) and Chittenango (11 points). The Indians were third in the pole vault (13 feet), with Ronnie Judge and McKenna Novak giving the Red Devils a second (25 feet 8 1/4 inches) in the long jump. For the Bears, Brigid St. Leger and Alex Paige took third in the shot put with 43 feet 7 1/4 inches, and Chittenango was fourth in the 4×800 as Shannon Bunce, Jordan Donnelly, Jessica Stoddard and Kaitlyn Alongi finished in 11:37.21.
Moving to the boys MVITA opener, Cazenovia earned fourth place with 42 points, with Utica Proctor (66 points) gaining the top spot as Oneida was seventh (23 points) and Chittenango ninth. Pat Dermody, Noah Shephard, Nick Genzel and Tyler Dunkle were second in the mile relay (22:04.91) for the Lakers, with the Bears finishing fifth and Oneida’s Connor McCarthy (4:54.97) the top individual performer.
