Both of the Cazenovia soccer teams found themselves needing to win on the road if it wanted to advance anywhere in the Section III Class B playoffs. On Wednesday night, the boys Lakers, seeded no. 10 in Class B, went north to play no. 7 seed Lowville in the opening round – and with a big effort in the second half, Cazenovia prevailed over the Red Raiders 3-0. Toughened by facing the likes of Skaneateles and Westhill in the OHSL Liberty division, the Lakers took all of Lowville’s best shots in the first half, yet kept it 0-0 behind a sound defense and the work of goalie Chris Matteson, who finished with eight saves. Then in the second half, Cazenovia started to break through, three times converting against Red Raiders netminder Connor Rhodes. Connor Race, with one goal and one assist, led the charge as Crozer Connor and Todd Christensen also scored. Alex Meade and James Duffy both earned assists, too. This sets up a big challenge for Cazenovia in Friday’s Class B quarterfinal – namely, a match against no. 2 seed Clinton, who had roared to a 16-0 mark in the regular season and were rested following a first-round bye. A day before the boys won, the girls soccer Lakers, who drew the no. 12 seed for its Class B tournament, took its own trip to Clinton, who had the no. 5 seed. Jamie Enders did a superb job in goal – but the Lakers still lost a 2-1 decision to the Warriors. Both sides ran at each other in the first half, and Clinton moved out in front 1-0. Still, it could not get anything further as Enders worked her way to 24 saves on the game. Cazenovia (5-10-2) had its own fair share of opportunities, and Colleen Dougherty did find the net in the second half. But Clinton also scored and, with Cassidy Dennison making 15 saves, the Warriors advanced to face Mount Markham in the Class B quarterfinals. Alyssa Devine and Colleen Lawlor notched Clinton’s goals.
