That pair of 2-1 defeats to Baldwinsville assured that the Liverpool girls soccer team would settle for second place behind the Bees in the CNY Counties League National division. However, the Warriors still wanted to get some wins as the Section III Class AA playoffs loomed, and at least on the surface, no game was as important as Saturday night’s regular-season finale against defending champion Christian Brothers Academy. Yet it ended in a 0-0 draw. Credit that to Liverpool’s defense, as Aimee Caluse, Danielle Sheehan, Chelsea Bowers and the rest of the Warriors’ back line fended off CBA’s numerous charges. Goalie Tori Corsaro had, arguably, her best game to date, earning 12 saves. This busy stretch had commenced with the Warriors going to Rome Free Academy and easily handling the Black Knights in a 4-0 decision. Only ahead 1-0 at the break, Liverpool used the second half to pull clear. Four different players – Kim Murphy, Amanda Heberger, Morgan Kline and Kayla Szczesniak – earned those four goals. Caluwee, Julia Heberger and Alexis Kline earned assists. Then the Warriors beat Utica Proctor 3-0 on a cold, wet Thursday night. Courtney Szczesniak, Kayla Whalen and Morgan Kline took turns scoring goals as Nikki Carfi and Corrine Lawler earned assists. To start its own trek through the last week of the regular season, Liverpool’s boys soccer team hosted Rome Free Academy last Monday night and blanked the Black Knights 5-0. Through the chilly conditions, the Warriors went up 2-0 by halftime and kept pulling further away. Taylor Grogonski scored twice, with Sebastian Encalada adding one goal and one assist. Akinniyi Akinpelu and Mike D’Agostino had the other goals, with Dan Bloshkin and Brad Bargelski adding assists. Against Utica Proctor Thursday night, the Warriors rolled to a 4-0 win, this time getting most of its margin in the second half. Leo Rubio stepped up with a goal and two assists, leading a balanced attack where Akinpelu had one goal and one assist, while Josh Yager and Kyle DeAngelis also scored. Joe Gilbert stopped all five shots he faced. Liverpool’s boys drew the no. 7 seed for the AA tournament, and faces no. 10 seed Utica Proctor in the first round. The winner advances to face no. 2 seed (and three-time defending champion) Baldwinsville in the quarterfinals. As for the girls Warriors, it has the no. 4 seed in the AA bracket and heads right into a quarterfinal match with no. 5 seed West Genesee. A Liverpool win could mean a third shot at B’ville in the semifinals next week.
