Matt Palumb and Kathy Taylor both have made their names on numerous fronts in local lacrosse. As a result, they are now both part of the pantheon as new members of the Upstate New York chapter of the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame. In a unique group of inductees, Taylor is joined by her husband, Joe, along with Palumb, coaches Steve Beville, Kirk Ventiquattro and Paul Rose and official Sue McVaugh in the class that will get inducted on Oct. 24 at a ceremony held at the Empire Room, inside the New York State Fairgrounds. Palumb was the centerpiece of Jamesville-DeWitt’s first state Class B championship team in 1986, starting in goal and earning All-American honors in the process. From there, Palumb went to Syracuse University, where in four years he accumulated a 51-5 record and the Orange won three straight NCAA championships. Once his playing days were done, Palumb stayed in lacrosse as an official, earning enough praise to get assignments in national title games in Division I, II and III and a spot in the 2006 World Lacrosse Championships, held in Ontario. Kathy Taylor first emerged as a star in the player’s ranks, too, as Cornell University’s first all-American, an honor she attained three consecutive times from 1982 to 1984. Soon after, Taylor took over the fledgling girls lacrosse program at Fayetteville-Manlius. In 19 seasons, from 1988 to 2006, her Hornets teams won nearly 80 percent of their games (245-62-3) and took home state Class A titles in 2004 and ’05, plus five sectional championships. Only a year after Taylor stepped down at F-M, she found herself coaching again, this time at SUNY-Cortland. In two seasons there, the Red Dragons have gone 30-10, won back-to-back SUNYAC tournament titles and gone to the NCAA Division III tournament. A brief reception will kick off events at the Empire Room on Oct. 24 at 5 p.m., with the dinner to follow at 6 p.m. Dinner tickets are $45, and can be paid out to Tom Hall, 315 Center St., Fayetteville, NY 13066.
