Home all through the first full week of October, the Solvay girls soccer team tried to take full advantage, and did earn a pair of victories and a tie during a span of three games in four nights. The good part came first, as the Bearcats faced Hannibal last Monday night and offered plenty of offense in a 5-0 shutout of the Warriors. Taking 25 shots, Solvay continually pressured the Hannibal net, eventually building a 3-0 halftime edge and pulling further away in the second half. Alexis Bandera, in particular, performed well, notching a three-goal hat trick. Lauren Hunter contributed one goal and one assist, with freshman Loren Lucio contributing one goal and one assist. Mykayla Perrotti had two assists as Anna Salvagno gained an assist, too. Cazenovia visited Earl Hadley Stadium on Wednesday night, and it turned into a tense defensive battle – but the Bearcats would pull it out, 1-0, over the Lakers. Unlike Solvay’s one-sided victory back on Sept. 3 at the Fenner Street Complex, Cazenovia did not fall behind early and did not get discouraged. Instead, it played tough and consistent defense, thwarting the Bearcats and seeing goalie Jamie Enders make 20 saves. For its part, Solvay also shut down the opposition, Chelsea Root stopping all 15 shots she faced. And that effort finally paid off in the second half as Bandera took a pass from Ashley Cooley and fired a shot past Enders for the game’s only goal. A tougher foe awaited Thursday night, as Solvay took on Homer – but the Bearcats played well enough to forge a 1-1 draw with the Trojans to move its mark to 6-3-1. Despite all the fast action in the first half and good chances on both ends, it remained 0-0. Solvay got on the board in the second half as Tessa Pucello converted off a feed from Hunter, while Homer’s Emma Porter landed an unassisted goal. That would be all, as the sides would go through 20 minutes of overtime without resolving the issue. Both Root and her Trojan counterpart, Jessica Parimter, picked up 15 saves. On the boys side, Solvay faced Cazenovia last Tuesday night and kept close for a half, but still took a 4-1 loss to the Lakers. Yuri Zdebsky’s goal, assisted by Nate Antonacci, allowed the Bearcats to go to halftime tied, 1-1. Kosta Sukhorukov finished with 14 saves, but Solvay’s defense wore down late as Cazenovia put in three unanswered goals. Tom Mackowiak scored twice to lead the Lakers’ effort. Solvay also lost 5-2 to Westhil, getting goals from Sean Mullholland and David Voytovich, with David Matysuk adding an assist. Westhill got a 3-1 lead by halftime, then pulled clear as Barak BenYehuda scored twice to negate Sukhorukov’s 19 saves. But the Bearcats finished the week well, beating Jordan-Elbridge 4-1 on Saturday as Matysuk achieved a three-goal hat trick, scoring in each half. Zdebsky had the other tally, adding an assist as Christian Salvagni picked up two assists. Joe Mills had J-E’s lone goal, with Aurie Schwarting getting credit for the assist. The boys Bearcats (4-8) face state Class B no. 1-ranked Skaneateles this week as the Solvay girls met Skaneateles Tuesday before back-to-back road games at East Syracuse-Minoa and Marcellus.
