When two reigning Section III girls soccer champions faced each other Thursday night at Alibrandi Stadium, it promised to be entertaining. And it was – at least for the partisans in red. Jamesville-DeWitt, the Class A rulers, took it right to Christian Brothers Academy, the Class AA rulers, and did not stop until it had registered an overwhelming 8-0 victory over the Brothers. CBA came into the game lacking the services of star senior Caitlin McConnell, sitting out with an injured hamstring, which put more pressure on Alexis Koval, who was sure to draw defensive attention. A large crowd turned out at Alibrandi, including vocal student sections from both schools, emblematic of the intensity within the J-D-CBA rivalry. Both sides flew out at the start, getting immediate scoring chances and taxing the defenses into active duty. Yet it remained scoreless in those early stages, and the importance of picking up that first goal grew as the minutes ticked by. J-D would get the breakthrough in the 20th minute in a strange manner. Nuss powered a 30-yard shot from the right side toward CBA goalie Courtney Henderson, and the ball took an odd bounce off the turf, eluded Henderson’s grasp, and went into the net. Behind for the first time all season, the Brothers saw it get worse when, in the 27th minute, Henderson could not handle a cross from the left, allowing Jessica Holmes to slide the loose ball home to make it 2-0. J-D kept pouncing on good fortune, even clearing it out when Esposito fumbled a shot in the 33rd minute, and Koval could not convert on a long run in the 37th minute, leaving it 2-0 going into halftime. The real blow came just 17 seconds into the second half, when Holmes charged in and, off a perfect pass from Maddy Devereaux, fired a shot past Henderson to make it a three-goal margin. All the while, J-D’s defense played a starring role. Stephanie Mannion, Jenna Hayward, Taryn Dausman and Rene Keller took turns frustrating Koval and her front-line mates as McConnell clearly was missed. Only once did it slip, as a foul inside the 18-yard box in the 61st minute allowed Koval to take a penalty kick – and even that shot went off the crossbar. Mere seconds later, the Rams went on the attack, and Tessa Devereaux drilled a 25-yard shot that found the top left corner of the net. Then it got out of hand. Nuss returned in the 65th minute, blasting in her second goal, and seconds later it was Tessa Devereaux converting again on a rebound of Olivia Ferlenda’s shot. And less than three minutes after that, Ferlenda converted off Emily Elbers’ corner kick, and just for an exclamation point, Maire Prosak added a goal in the final minute. Just before they took the field, the CBA boys soccer team met up with Fowler, and rode an early conversion to a 1-0 victory over the Falcons. The Brothers got all the offense it needed when it lined up for a free kick nine minutes into the first half. Kris Triana’s 25-yard shot bent around Fowler’s wall and crashed into the right side of the net. Instead of following that up, though, CBA slowed down the rest of the first half, unable to get many more scoring chances. The pace picked up early in the second half, yet the margin remained at one. Fowler stayed patient, but only made sporadic runs into the Brothers’ end. And it never had another close chance after CBA goalie David Anderson made tough stops on back-to-back shots midway through the second half.
