When the Jamesville-DeWitt girls swim team welcomed defending Section III Class A champion Christian Brothers Academy to its pool for Friday’s season-opening neighborhood duel, it expected a steep challenge. What the Red Rams may not have expected, though, was seeing the Brothers tear up the record book in the course of a 97-71 victory that gave CBA the early edge in the Onondaga High School League race. Summer Schmitt, in particular, caused some havoc. In the 100-yard butterfly, Schmitt, in a time of 59.68 seconds, set a new J-D pool record, with J-D’s Kelly Coyne (1:02.31) in second. Then Schmitt did the exact same thing in the 100 backstroke, winning in a new pool-best mark of 1:01.51. As if that weren’t enough, Kathryn Coughlin put together a third pool-record time for the Brothers when she won the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.49, leaving J-D’s Molly Hair more than four seconds behind. Coughlin and Schmitt had already helped Destiny Cerlanek and Maggie Fletcher tear to a time of 1:53.48 in the 200 medley relay, the first race of the meet. Fletcher had her own star turns in the sprints, needing just 25.65 seconds to tear through the 50 freestyle and, with a time of 54.95 seconds, winning the 100 freestyle by nearly five seconds over J-D’s Morgan Gunther. Ruthie Speidel, fresh off her medal haul at this summer’s Empire State Games in Buffalo, needed just 2:01.01 to work through the 200 freestyle, then went to the 500 freestyle and prevailed in 5:19.65. J-D’s lone individual title came in the 200 individual medley, where Coyne, in a time of 2:20.4, beat Cerlanek by more than two seconds. CBA’s Kelly Bewley prevailed in diving in 183.15 points, just 5.6 points better than J-D’s Danielle Doss. Speidel and Coughlin joined Zoe McCauley and Lexy McCauley to win the 200 freestyle relay (1:49.17). And Speidel returned with Schmitt, Fletcher and Cerlanek to post a time of 3:48.65 in the 400 freestyle relay to close out the meet. Both teams will now look to meets against Skaneateles – J-D on Wednesday, CBA on Sept. 21.
