Two weeks from now, the Cazenovia football team will host Vernon Verona Sherrill – and, many people think, superiority in the Class B East division will be at stake. Following wildly varying experiences on the season’s opening weekend, the Lakers and Red Devils began heading down the path to that Sept. 26 clash at Buckley-Volo Field with big wins on Saturday afternoon. Cazenovia went to Hannibal and was once again completely dominant in a 54-0 conquest of the Warriors. In the same manner, VVS jumped all over South Jefferson in its home opener and cruising to a 42-14 victory over the Spartans. For the Lakers’ part, the act it had to follow – a 56-0 deconstruction of Bishop Ludden at the Carrier Dome in the Sept. 4 Kickoff Classic – seemed difficult enough, especially since Hannibal was at home and, in its opener, had come within seconds of beating Solvay in a 33-27 loss in the Dome. No problem, though, as Cazenovia had 40 points on the board by halftime and six touchdowns – scored by six different players. John Greacen got things moving with an 11-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Then, working from his own 35-yard line, Jeff Hopsicker threw deep and found Doyle Judge, who finished off a 65-yard TD and made it 14-0. A 26-point second quarter would follow, as Xavier Coates put up his own 11-yard scoring run and Jose Wells found the end zone from two yards out. Hopsicker would also find Chris Giardina and Chris Schaffner on a pair of four-yard TD passes. Wells returned in the third quarter as backup quarterback Tanner Whiteman found him for a three-yard TD pass, and Dylan Muller added a six-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter. The only negative was seeing Nick Christakos miss a pair of extra point, though he did go six-for-eight. VVS was quite eager to return to action after squandering a fourth-quarter lead to defending Class B champion Westhill in a 38-28 defeat where four Red Devils turnovers made quite a difference. Minus those mistakes, VVS just ran and passed its way right past South Jefferson, seizing a 35-0 lead by halftime by mixing things up against an overmatched Spartan defense. Two scoring drives in the first quarter produced touchdowns, each of them on short runs – Dylan Guider with a five-yard plunge, Matt Silker with a one-yard plunge. Then it was Tyler Mautner’s turn to show off in the second quarter. Three times, Mautner went deep and found the end zone – 40 yards to Silker, then 43 yards to Tyler Curtis, and to cap it off an 87-yard bomb to Curtis. Just to add to the point, Mautner returned to the air in the third quarter to fling a fourth long TD pass, 44 yards to Silker. South Jefferson did not get on the board until the third quarter. All told, Mautner threw 15 passes, completing 10 of them from 249 yards. Curtis caught six of those passes for 187 yards. Before VVS and Cazenovia can meet, they have to get through separate road games next weekend, the Red Devils going to Phoenix on Friday and the Lakers visiting 2-0 Holland Patent on Saturday.
