In the course of two weeks, each of Liverpool’s soccer, football and field hockey teams will make their debuts on the newly-installed artificial turf field put into Warrior Stadium. As it happened, the girls soccer Warriors were the first varsity side to make an appearance in a regular-season contest Wednesday night, and it proved successful as Liverpool recorded a 6-0 victory over Henninger. Though long a power in the local ranks, Liverpool has not won an outright sectional title since 2001, and found more frustration last fall when, as a no. 3 seed in Class AA, it took a 2-1 loss at home to West Genesee in the sectional quarterfinals. With a large returning cast for 2010, the Warriors want to make a championship push, and it went right after Henninger with 24 shots, gradually getting clear in the second half after taking an early 2-0 lead. Kim Murphy had two goals and one assist, while Ally Zywicki also found the net twice. Andrea Flood had one goal and one assist as Courtney Szczesniak also found the net. Erika Napolitano and Morgan Kline found the assist column. As this was going on, the Liverpool boys soccer team went to Sunnycrest Field for its opener and needed a late goal to squeak past Henninger 2-1. Trying to improve upon an 8-9 record it had in 2009, the Warriors played the Black Knights to a 1-1 halftime draw, then pulled ahead in the second half. Patience was required, as Liverpool took four times as many shots (20) as Henninger. Mike Schneider and A.C. LaFlore scored for the Warriors, while Taylor Groginski picked up an assist. Both of Liverpool’s teams are playing Fayetteville-Manlius next Wednesday, and the girls get another high-profile on Sept. 18 when it visits Baldwinsville.
