Every summer, Tim Davis emerges from Skaneateles Falls to canoe and kayak at the Empire State Games — a chance he missed in 2009 because of state budget woes that forced the event’s cancellation for the first time. But with the game revived in Buffalo last week, Davis went back into the boat — and straight to the top of the medal podium on multiple occasions Saturday afternoon at University at Buffalo’s LaSalle Lake. Davis combined with Central teammates Mike Wolfson (Baldwinsville), Jon Gilbert (Oswego) and Andrew Smith (Ithaca) to win the 500-meter quads gold medal in a time of 1:43.59, more than 10 seconds ahead of runner-up Western. In the men’s pairs 200-meter final, Davis struck again, as he and Gilbert paddled through the course in 43.51 seconds, leaving Western (47.90 seconds) and the rest far behind. Davis and Wolfson got the bronze in the 500-meter pairs in 2:08.74. This triple-medal effort highlighted what Skaneateles athletes did for Central region squads throughout Western New York during the ESG. Here are some of the other standouts. Lacrosse – Through round-robin play at Canisius College, Lakers star Kevin Rice led the Central scholastic men’s team in goal-scoring as it went 5-0, including a dramatic 8-7 overtime victory over long-time rival Long Island. Perhaps it wasn’t a coincidence that, in Sunday’s championship game rematch, Long Island concentrated its defense on Rice, holding him to few shots and no goals as Central lost a tough 7-6 decision and, again, had to settle for the silver medal. Meanwhile, at Niagara University, Carly Davis and the Central scholastic women’s team went 3-2 to reach the bronze-medal game, but lost third place to Adirondack 11-6. Tennis – Ethan Wilcox is bringing home a silver medal as part of the Central scholastic men’s team. In matches at UB’s Ellicott Courts, Wilcox and Central went 3-1, only losing to Hudson Valley, who took the gold. Gymnastics – Kaela Fiutak earned a bronze medal with the Central scholastic women’s team at Buffalo State College Sports Arena with 150.425 points. Indiviually, Fiutak took 18th in the all-around with 30.05 points. She tied for 10th in the balance beam and was 14th on the vault in the individual apparatus. Soccer – Skaneateles star A.J. Richichi and his Central scholastic men’s team went 1-2 at the Amherst North French Soccer complex, only able to beat Hudson Valley in a penalty-kick shoot-out as it missed the medals. Judo – Across the Buffalo State campus at Houston Gym, Chris Braun earned his own bronze medal, tying Long Island’s Guy Semione for third place in the open men’s heavyweight division. Volleyball – Ryan Merle, bringing experience from leading undefeated Skaneateles to the Section III Class B title last winter, helped Central go 3-5 in games, though it was unable to claim a medal at UB’s Alumni Arena. Fencing – Brendan Dickerson and Virginia Hamlin, in the scholastic division, and Keith Vandingstee, in the open division, all fenced at Niagara Falls High School, though none of the Central teams earned a medal.
