Through two weeks of Section III softball playoff action, luck had held and not a single game was moved due to weather. All that changed on a strange Saturday afternoon when unsettled conditions at the Gillette Road complex in Cicero forced all five sectional championship games to be postponed. Only one game was taking place when the weather. In the Class C final, defending champion South Lewis had just tied Bishop Ludden, 2-2, when thunder rumbled in the sky just before 12:30 p.m., forcing a mandatory 30-minute delay. Just when the game was to resume a half-hour later, a drenching downpour hit the area, forming puddles over the three diamonds at Gillette. As they attempted to clean that up, intermittent rain and thunder resumed, with no immediate end in sight. Just after 2 p.m., a final decision to postpone the games was rendered. With more rain in the forecast for Sunday, all the games would be moved to Monday afternoon and evening. The new schedule has, at 4 p.m., the resumption of the South Lewis-Bishop Ludden game. At 5 p.m, it’s Hamilton meeting two-time defending champion Stockbridge Valley in the Class D title game, with Cazenovia playing South Jefferson at that same time for the Class B championship. And at 7 p.m., Oneida plays Jamesville-DeWitt for the Class A title and rivals Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse clash for the Class AA championship. Due to this, Class A regional play, set for Monday at the Adirondack Sports Complex in Glens Falls, will need to be pushed back. So long as the weather holds, all the other regional games will still be on Tuesday – the Class C and D games at Gillette, the Class B game at the BAGSAI complex near Binghamton, and the Class AA regional final at Glens Falls.
