For the fourth consecutive year, the West Genesee girls lacrosse team is bound for the state Class A final four – and the home folks in Camillus got to witness the final step. In total contrast to the high drama of its win over Fayetteville-Manlius in the Section III final four days earlier, the Wildcats made quick work of Section IV champion Binghamton in a 23-3 romp Saturday at Wildcat Stadium. This marked the seventh straight time WG have won in regional play. Five of the six previous times, the Wildcats have gone on to win the state title. Right from the opening draw, Binghamton was overwhelmed as the Patriots did not provide nearly the challenge that F-M did. WG needed all 50 minutes to get 14 goals on the Hornets – and it had 16 on Binghamton, all in a row, before halftime. This gave coach Bob Elmer a chance to use most of his players, resting his stars for the bigger games ahead. Morgan Corso, with four goals and three assists, and Shannon Hawley, with three goals and three assists, led an offense where 13 different players would put in goals by day’s end. Bre Hudgins handled the draws again, also gaining two goals and two assists. Karlyn Tupper, Katie Hart, Nicole Desko and Julie Dussing each had two goals and one assist, while Mel Murphy, Kara Datellas, Erica Geremia, Mary Ferranti and Marissa McNamara also scored. On Friday at 9:30 a.m., WG will face Lakeland/Panas (Section I) in the Class A state semifinal at Tompkins County Community College. The winner goes to SUNY-Cortland Saturday morning at that same time to play for the state championship.
