For its last outing as a full unit, the Jamesville-DeWitt boys track and field team faced its most strenuous challenge of the spring – and beat it back. The Red Rams, with 138 points, had just enough to edge past Indian River’s total of 133 points and win Friday’s Section III Class A-1 championship meet at Rome Free Academy Stadium. David Salbert contributed to three J-D victories. Alone, he beat IR’s Darrius Bryant, 51.32 seconds to 51.57, in the 400-meter dash, and also won the triple jump by going 45 feet 1 inch while taking third (20 feet 8 1/2 inches) in the long jump. And in the 4×400 relay, Salbert, Max Smith, Tim Kendrick and Will Sterriker won in a time of 3:30.26, beating Fulton by 1.69 seconds. Kendrick and Smith joined Austin Davis and Alex Wilmot to dominate the 4×800 relay, with J-D winning in 8:33.04, more than 16 seconds clear of the field. Davis, on his own, prevailed in the mile in 4:32.33. Ira Griffin beat three IR runners to take the 200-meter dash in 22.64 seconds. Michael Paul won the discus, going 132 feet 1 inch, and added a fourth in the shot put (44 feet 11 inches) as Brett Fallon finished fifth and Kyree Adams took sixth place. It helped, too, that Tyler Petersen competed alone in the pentathlon, so his 2,325 points went unchallenged and produced 10 crucial points. Sterriker was second in the 400-meter hurdles in 59.88 seconds and fourth in the 110 high hurdles, with Wilmot sixth in the 400 sprint behind Salbert. J-D added a third-place finish in the 4×100 relay in 45.57 seconds. Jack Healy was third in the 3,200-meter run in 10:56.52. East Syracuse-Minoa, who was sixth with 50 points, saw Mike Coogan emerge with the victory in the 3,200, needing 10:17.20 to take the top spot as he also finished a close second (4:33.37) to Davis in the mile. Peter Ferstler win the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:56.12, while Steve Episcopo cleared 12 feet 3 inches to prevail in the pole vault. Craig Andrianos got second place in the 800-meter run in 2:01.55 as Christian Larrabee was fifth in the 400 sprint.
