Another week, another big meet for the Skaneateles girls track and field team — and again, the Lakers were looking up at Cazenovia in the final standings. Much like the OHSL Liberty division meet 10 days earlier, the Lakers would get lots of points in Thursday’s Section III Class B-1 championship meet at Solvay’s Earl Hadley Stadium. Yet the Skaneateles total of 92 points finished just behind Phoenix (95 points) for the runner-up spot, and both were behind Cazenovia, who came out on top with 137 points. Emily Wood impressed with a second-place total of 2,082 points in the five-event pentathlon as she won the 800-meter run and shot put and tied for first in the high jump. Still, Bishop Grimes’ Samantha Schaefer won with 2,151 points. Victoria Sakal battled again with Phoenix star Ashley Palmer in the 100-meter dash and took second with 12.91 seconds as Palmer (12.67) prevailed. Much the same thing happened in the 200-meter dash, where Sakal was second (26.92 seconds) and Palmer won in 26.35 seconds. Carly Strods was second in the 800-meter run in 2:26.26, also teaming with Danielle Mazzeo, Erin Tonzi and Grace Van der Ven for second place in the 4×800 relay in 9:54.05. In the 4×400, Strods, Van der Ven, Amanda Gray and Cassie Berg were second in 4:14.95, just behind South Jefferson (4:14.19) at the wire. On her own, Van der Ven was sixth in the long jump. Gabby Eckles took second place in the triple jump, going 33 feet 4 3/4 inches as she also tied for third in the high jump, clearing 4 feet 10 inches. Caroline Walton was second in the shot put with a toss of 33 feet 9 1/4 inches and third (88 feet) in the discus. Kaela Fiutak got third place in the pole vault, clearing 8 feet 6 inches with fewer misses than teammate Katherine Hill, who was fourth. Madeline Adams was fifth in the 3,000-meter run in 12:08.13, while Brigid Judge was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:16.68.
