For a brief moment, the Bishop Grimes softball and baseball team’s fortunes switched in different directions. The softball Cobras, bound for the playoffs, lost 5-2 to Onondaga last Monday afternoon, while the Grimes baseball team finally broke its skid and beat OCS 2-0 to ignite a three-game win streak that salvaged an otherwise rough campaign. Mired at 2-14 after an 8-2 loss to undefeated, state Class B no. 1-ranked Bishop Ludden on May 15, the Cobras turned to David Campese, who was dominant on the mound. All Campese gave up was a pair of hits and two walks while accumulating 14 strikeouts. OCS’s Mike Burlin was just as good, keeping it 0-0 until the bottom of the sixth, when Bryan Smith’s clutch single brought home John Smith and Ryan Grace. Meanwhlie, on the softbal side, Onondaga jumped all over Sarah Oberton for four runs in the top of the first inning, all the offense it would need. Oberton finished with 10 strikeouts and settled down after that rough start, but all the Cobras could manage was single runs in the first and third innings off Tigers pitcher Alyssa Radio, despite nine hits. Nicole Donati had four of those hits, driving in a run, as did Cassidy Weeks. In Thursday’s game against Weedsport, the baseball Cobras struck again, beating the Warriors 4-1 as it scored three times in the top of the first inning and added a run in the third to support Josh Murray, who allowed just five hits while striking out five. Evan Pitonzo stepped up with a pair of RBIs, while Casey Schad also drove in a run. Campese had two hits and scored a pair of runs. Grimes then made it three straight wins on Friday, edging Port Byron 3-2. A two-run inning put the Cobras in front, and when the Panthers tied things up, Grimes waited until the top of the seventh to plate the winning run. Pitonzo allowed five hits in another strong pitching performance. Mike Timpano, Will Commisso and Artie Van Housen each scored runs as Campese hit the game’s only double. Grimes saw the streak end with a 9-4 loss to Corcoran on Saturday and it finished at 5-15, having earned more than half its wins in that last week of the season. Meanwhile, the Grimes softball team picked up the no. 6 seed in Class C-1 and would travel to Little Falls for its opening-round playoff game.
