Make it a clean sweep for the Cazenovia girls track and field team as, once again, it proved itself to be unbeatable in the OHSL Liberty division. Having swept through an 8-0 regular season, the Lakers went to Marcellus for last Monday’s league championship meet and accumulated 135 points, easily ahead of runner-up Skaneateles (95 points) and the rest of the field.
A big element of this victory was Cazenovia winning two of the three relays. In the 4×100, Piper Gianforte, Rachel Schmidtka, Audrey Bowers and Katie Woodworth combined for a time of 52.68 seconds, beating Skaneateles by 0.70 seconds. Later, in the 4×400, Ashley Winn, Meghan Liddell, Tori Widrick and Hollie Marcelle worked together to post 4:16.88, again with Skaneateles (4:18.32) in the runner-up spot. Marcelle and Liddell helped Rachel Grimm and Whitney Goris finish fourth (10:48.29) in the 4×800. Individually, Paige Biviano struck in the 100-meter high hurdles, her time of 15.97 seconds more than a second clear of the field. Biviano also took second in the long jump, going 17 feet 1 inch, third in the triple jump (32 feet 5 inches) and third in the high jump, clearing 4 feet 10 inches, accounting for 30 points by herself. Gianforte returned to win the pole vault, clearing 8 feet 9 inches, three inches better than Skaneateles’ Katherine Hill. Chelsea Procopio worked her way to second place in the pentathlon as she earned 1,752 points, with teammate Beth Marcelle (1,588 points) in third. Hollie Marcelle got second place in the 800-meter run in 2:24.68. Winn was second in the 200-meter dash in 26.39 seconds and third in the 100-meter dash (12.95 seconds), while Goris needed 11:22.09 for second place in the 3,000-meter run. Rae Tobey worked her way to second in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 8:04.21. Widrick got third in the 1,500-meter run (5:19.01) and Jillian Vogl third in the 400-meter dash in 1:01.98. Liddell was fourth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:14.55). Burr and Christy Tainter were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the shot put. By contrast, Cazenovia’s boys track team only had 16 points in its OHSL Liberty meet. Eric Goldman had the best finishes, going to third in the long jump (19 feet 5 1/4 inches) and sixth in the triple jump. Zach Bender, Eric Janowsky, Jose Well and Tom Machoviack got to fourth (48.62 seconds) in the 4×100, with Pat Dermody fifth in the 3,200-meter run in 9:54.10. The Lakers also were fifth in the 4×400 (3:43.37) as Bender, Janowsky, Eric Goldman and Tom Wightman took part. Travis Mimms got sixth (38 feet 11 1/2 inches) in the shot put.
