Still with a chance to snag the OHSL Liberty division regular-season title, the Cazenovia boys tennis team went to Skaneateles last Monday afternoon and won the battle of Laker teams in a 3-2 decision. A sweep of the doubles matches proved crucial. Lee Cudney and Sam Concilla defeated Grant Bille and Dan Zollner 6-2, 6-2, while Jon Lyga teamed with Crozer Connor for a 6-2, 6-1 romp over Shiva Sharma and Sasha Davroshihk. Up in singles, Jon Cipiti lost to Joey Robinson 6-3, 6-3, and Nick Christakos saw an early lead get away in a 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 defeat to Ryan Sayko. But Chris Rogers earned the clinching point by surviving a tough first set and beating Ethan Wilcox 7-5, 6-3. The Lakers then won a pair of 5-0 matches over Hannibal Tuesday afternoon. In single-set races to eight games, Cudney won by a combined 16-2 margin over Alex Gordon, with Concilla doing the same to Darryl Rupert and Christakos roaring past Paul Mogrim 16-4. Cipiti and Rogers teamed up for back-to-back 8-1 wins over Spencer Malone and Zach Buckle, with Lyga and Conner handling Joe Griffin and Gregg Verway in a pair of 8-3 matches. To close out the week, Cazenovia beat Marcellus 4-1 on Friday as Robinson, Wilcox and Sayko lost just three games between them in six sets of singles work. The doubles matches were split, with Cudney and Conicila beating Shane Barner and Brian Kershaw 6-2, 6-1. That win allowed Cazenovia to tie Christian Brothers Academy for first place in the final OHSL Liberty division regular-season standings, each with 10-1 marks.
