If all went well, the Jamesville-DeWitt baseball and softball teams would still challenge for OHSL Freedom division honors — but all did not go well. On the softball side, J-D ran into a red-hot Chittenango squad last Tuesday and, despite another first-rate pitching effort from Jenn Keeler, lost to the Bears 2-1. Chittenango, who beat CBA a day earlier, got run-scoring hits from Haley Landers in the first and sixth innings to offset the run Tessa Devereaux scored in the top of the fifth. Keeler had eight strikeouts against five hits and two walks. But Bears counterpart Kaleigh Koegel won, holding J-D to four hits while striking out 10. Devereaux, Keeler, Mary Young and Rachel Honis had the hits, with Rachel Fagut walking twice. J-D would bounce back by sweeping Cortland in a Thursday doubleheader. In the first of those games, the Rams’ pair of first-inning runs proved enough for Keeler in a 4-1 decision as she threw a three-hit complete game with 12 strikeouts. Keeler and Ashley Thompson each posted a pair of hits, too, as Christina Oaster and Lateja Bryant scored runs. The other game, decided 3-2 in eight innings, saw J-D score in the first and seventh frames, only to have Cortland rally and score twice in the bottom of the seventh to stay alive. A run in the eighth helped the Rams pull through, though, as Young earned an RBI, just as she had in the other game. Keeler again went the route, allowing five hits as she pitched 15 total innings in the twin bill. For the baseball version of the Red Rams, a quiet hitting attack proved costly last Tuesday afternoon as it took a 3-1 loss to Chittenango. Justin Marzella had a solid showing on the mound, not giving up any runs after the third inning and earning eight strikeouts in his complete-game effort. J-D didn’t give him much help, though, only getting a fifth-inning run (Eric Thompson earned the RBI, driving home Marzella) and three hits off Bears pitchers Kevin Streeter and Greg Jasek, who combined for five strikeouts. Trying to recover Thursday, at Cortland, the Rams instead met with more frustration in a 9-6 loss to the Purple Tigers. Leading 2-1, J-D saw everything fall apart when Cortland batted around in the bottom of the fourth, producing six runs and taking Mike Gianni out of the game. Eric Schwartz took over in relief and settled things down, and J-D used four runs in the top of the fifth to close the gap to 7-6 before the Purple Tigers scored twice in the sixth. Kenny Schunck hit the game’s only home run, a solo shot, as Schwartz and Tom Driscoll each got two RBIs. Cortland’s Ryan Hubbard led his side with three RBIs.
