No one was going to get in front of the Cazenovia girls track and field team as it stormed to a perfect 8-0 mark and the outright OHSL Liberty division regular-season championship. The Lakers sewed up the crown Tuesday on its home track at Buckley-Volo Field, fending off a strong challenge from Phoenix to prevail 81-60 while also routing Westhill 128-13. As has been the case all season, Paige Biviano played a big role, winning the 100-meter high hurdles in a swift 15.4 seconds and clearing 5 feet to win the high jump. But the Lakers’ depth showed, too, mainly in a relay sweep. Meghan Liddell, Rae Tobey, Hollie Marcelle and Margaret Wolsey got that started by winning the 4×800. A different quartet — Jillian Vogl, Piper Gianforte, Ashley Winn and Audrey Bowers — took the 4×100 in 51.7 seconds. And to cap it off, Vogl, Liddell, Winn and Marcelle returned to claim the 4×400 relay in 4:20.6, this while two of those runners claimed individual events, too. For Vogl, it was running the 400-meter dash in 1:01.9, as Marcelle took the 800-meter run in 2:31 flat. Also, Gianforte cleared 8 feet 6 inches to win the pole vault as Ellen Burr threw the shot put 29 feet 3 inches. Whitney Goris got a victory in the 3,000-meter run in 11:30.4. All this negated the fine effort of Phoenix’s Ashley Palmer, who battled her way to wins in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash (Winn was second in both sprints), long jump and triple jump. Palmer’s long jump covered 18 feet 2 inches, one of the best in Section III this season. As this was going on, Cazenovia’s boys track team earned a split, beating Phoenix 82-59, but falling to Westhill 98-43. Pat Dermody did give the Lakers a double in the distance events, running the mile in 4:47.5 and taking the 3,200-meter run in 10:54.1, while Eric Goldmann put up a top long jump of 19 feet 3 inches. Cazenovia also took the 4×100 relay as Jose Wells, Eric Janovsky, Tom Mackowiak and Zach Bender finished in 47.2 seconds.
