In the midst of one of its toughest stretches of the season, the Skaneateles girls lacrosse team had to go to Alibrandi Stadium Wednesday night and deal with 10-0 Christian Brothers Academy in a battle of the two leaders in the respective OHSL Liberty divisions. And except for the opening minutes, the Lakers could not cope with the Brothers, whose speed and aggression won out as Skaneateles took a 15-8 defeat. At least in those opening moments, it looked like the Lakers were not impressed with CBA’s gaudy mark. Twice, it attacked — and both times it converted, Diane Vitkus getting one goal and assisting on the other, by Carly Davis. From there, though, CBA took over, getting three goals in a span of 1:05 from Taylor Gait, Sophie Racciatti and Marisa Romeo to pull ahead for good. All this happened even though the Lakers kept the Brothers’ best player, Katie Webster, off the goal-scoring column until late in the first half. By that point, though, CBA led 8-3, and though Maddy Morrissey converted late in the half to make it 8-4, Racciatti’s third goal brought the margin back to 8-4 at the break. Try as it could, Skaneateles could not get closer than five the rest of the way. Morrissey got shut out in the second half as Carly Davis finished with three goals and one assist, while Aly Davis got a goal and two assists and Vitkus found the net twice. Meanwhile, Webster got three of her four goals after the break to thwart any Laker comeback. Right before CBA, the Lakers got a real test at Tully last Monday night, earning its margin early and holding off the Black Knights 14-10. Tully paid in the early going for trying to swarm Maddy Morrissey. Other Skaneateles players got open — and they converted often, leading to a 9-5 halftime edge. Though it was an even second half, Sknaeateles kept the Black Knights from getting too close. Diane Vitkus and Aly Davis led this effort, as Vitkus got three goals and one assist and Davis had a team-high four goals. Erin Callahan backed up her single goal with three assists as Shelby McNeilly and Carly Davis each got two goals. Grace Kelly had a goal and two assists as Morrissey still had one goal and one assist. Erin Featherstone (four goals, one assist) and Alison Bolt (three goals, one assist) led Tully’s effort.
