Though it had a solid 5-4 record, the Westhill boys lacrosse team lacked anything close to a signature win that could make the rest of the Section III Class C crowd worry. All that changed Monday afternoon, when the Warriors went to LaFayette and toppled the defending Class C champion Lancers in a 12-9 decision. Granted, LaFayette, who started 7-0, was reeling from losses to Skaneateles and Jamesville-DeWitt in the previous 10 days. But Westhill would make things worse. In a complete first half, the Warriors zoomed out to a 7-2 lead. Not only did its attack control the tempo, it finished off scoring plays and, on the defensive side, turned back LaFayette at every corner as Mark McAnaney got most of his 13 saves. The Lancers, led by Lyle Thompson’s three goals and three assists, closed the gap in the third quarter, but Westhill stood up in a fourth-quarter exchange and stayed out in front. Tris Nicola, with two goals and four assists, anchored an attack where Alex Lesins produced four goals and Owen Nicola earned three goals and one assist. John Zimmerman had two goals and two assists as Dylan Tripodi produced a goal and two assists. Austin Webb earned an assist, too. Later that night, Marcellus put up a big first half during last Monday night’s 23-1 win over Bishop Ludden. In the first two periods alone, the Mustangs registered 16 unanswered goals, and it kept the Gaelic Knights off the board until the fourth quarter, long after the starters had left. Tyler Tomeny and Carmen Brienza led with three goals apiece. Greg Ramsden and Matt McCaffer each had two goals and two assists as Dalton Wenzel, Carey Mellinicki, Nick Nyue and R.J. Linder had matching totals of two goals and one assist. Tom Glose and Steve Brissette both got a goal and two assists, while Tommy McNaney and Joe Krai put up one goal and one assist apiece. Martin Tobin scored, too. Sean Byrne had Ludden’s lone goal in the fourth quarter.
