Canastota’s softball team stayed among the Center State Conference leaders with two more wins early this week. The Raiders’ week began Monday with Jessica Patterelli being close to perfect in a 9-0 shutout of Cooperstown. All the Redskins could manage was a single hit as Patterelli rang up 13 strikeouts, and that only accounted for half her contributions. At the plate, Patterelli fell a single short of the cycle as she ripped a home run, triple and double and finished with three RBIs. Much of this came in the fifth and sixth innings, where the Raiders staged back-to-back four-run rallies to put the game away. In all, the Raiders had nine hits as Valerie Baer and Alexis Havens each finished with two RBIs and Andrea Underwood also drove in a run. On Wednesday, with the sun back out and the wind howling, Canastota survived a shaky outing with Mount Markham, beating the Mustangs 18-10. Hitters enjoyed a wind advantage and combined for 27 hits –14 for Canastota, 13 for Mount Markham. That included Patterelli bashing a pair of home runs and crossing the plate five times on her way to three RBIs. Ashley Hammes emerged at the plate with two hits and four RBIs, while Havens and Alicia Hibbard each matched Patterelli with three RBIs. Baer (the winning pitcher) and Samantha McCarthy drove in two runs apiece as Kelsey Lawrence added an RBI. Canastota had at least three runs in four different innings, including a six-run second. Canastota’s baseball team put on quite a show against Cooperstown last Monday, blanking the Redskins 14-0 to move to the top of the Center State Conference standings. Jeff Merrell accounted for the shutout, going the route as he accumulated nine strikeouts while allowing just four hits. Already ahead 3-0, the Raiders settled matters by toying with Cooperstown’s pitchers in an 11-run sixth inning that featured eight walks, two errors and three hit batsmen. Thus, Canastota only accumulated nine hits on the day, including Alex Foster’s triple and Jake LaBarre’s double. But the Raiders lost Wednesday to Mount Markham 5-3, the game turning when the Mustangs landed three runs off Foster in the top of the third inning. All told, Foster allowed six hits in his complete-game effort as LaBarre belted a home run.
