Not only has the Fayetteville-Manlius boys lacrosse team kept itself unbeaten, it has moved up the state Class A rankings. F-M’s 7-0 mark entering the week meant that it rose to no. 7 in the state Class A poll, and the games that followed would back up that high consideration. The Hornets played Liverpool Tuesday night at Solvay’s Earl Hadley Stadium, the Warriors’ temporary home field as its own turf is being replaced. Hot from the start on a frigid evening — and paying no attention to the Warriors’ 6-1 start – F-M rolled past Liverpool in an 18-6 decision. As it kept the ball for most of the first quarter, F-M blanked Liverpool and earned a 5-0 lead. The Warriors got on the board in the second period, but the Hornets still streched the margin to 10-2, and continued to pull away. Matt Klepper kept getting open for shots — and he converted six times to set a career mark. Passes came from Brendan Englert and Mike Kutzer, both of whom had three assists to go with single tallies. Mike O’Neil put together his own three-goal hat trick, while Glen Trachtenberg gained two goals and two assists and Ari Waffle also found the net twice. Todd Webster, Jim Krizman and Chris Anklin joined Kutzer and Englert in the one-goal column, while Tim Beach earned two assists. Connor Chen and Sean Wildhack gained assists, too. Back home, the F-M girls lacrosse team met Liverpool and improved to 6-1 with a first-half blitz that left the Warriors far behind and led to a 17-6 win, almost identical to the boys winning margin. Quite unlike the March 30 encounter at Sunnycrest Field, which needed overtime, the Hornets jumped on the Warriors from the opening draw. Attacking — and converting — at will, F-M didn’t stop until it had a 13-2 margin, making the rest of the game a formality. Six different players achieved multiple goals as F-M showed its best depth and balance all season. Taylor Robinson, Mollie Caputo, Marilyn Farrell and Kelly Perry each put up three-goal hat tricks, with Robinson adding three assists. Close behind them, Mari Ryu and Morgan Same had two-goal outings, with Sarah Lux contributing a goal and two assists. Katie Sipple and Alex Murphy earned assists, too. Both F-M teams are off until Saturday, where they join forces for a doubleheader – the girls meeting Oswego at 3 p.m, the boys facing Henninger at 5 p.m. It’s all part of “Something for Shafer”, the day-long fund-raiser for the family of long-time English teacher John Shafer, who passed away in early February. It includes varsity and JV baseball and softball games against Chittenango, concessions and booths run by school clubs and a nighttime dance in the school courtyards with students from F-M and Chittenango.
