Fresh off surviving its first big test (a narrow win at Marcellus on April 22), the unbeaten Christian Brothers Academy girls lacrosse team met some more determined challengers – and still hasn’t lost. Westhill nearly changed that fact on a windy Wednesday afternoon, but the Brothers held off the Warriors 13-12 while getting yet another star turn from its only senior, Katie Webster. Unlike the Marcellus game where she was held without a goal, Webster was quite active here, reaching double digits in points as she earned five goals and five assists. Every one of them was needed to fend off Westhill, a team with a goalie (Morgan Roach) headed to Wagner College next year and a fine trio of attackers in Emily Haggerty, Brenna Rainone and Caroline Buonocore. With a series of close losses behind them, the Warriors figured that it was due for a turnaround. After Webster fed Meg Hannon and Sophie Racciatti for goals to put CBA up 2-0, the Warriors countered with goals by Haggerty and Rainone 47 seconds apart. It was the first of eight times the game would be tied. The Brothers overcame a 14-minute drought to seize a 6-4 lead, only to quickly squander it as Westhill tied it, 6-6, by halftime. And though Webster pushed CBA back in front 7-6 early in the second half, Rainone answered a minute later. Much of the second half amounted to a two-step. Four times, Westhill would seize a one-goal lead. All four times, CBA would counter and tie it again. Not until Taylor Gait hit on her second goal with 4:50 left did the Brothers reclaim the lead at 12-11, and Webster added her fifth goal with 3:34 to play. But it was far from over. Haggerty’s fifth goal, with 2:33 to play, cut the margin back to one, and the Warriors would get a last-second chance, only to see CBA’s defense strip the ball away, allowing the clock to run out. Racciatti and Caroline Webster joined Gait in the two-goal column as Taylor Poplawski also converted. Haggerty finished with five goals, as Rainone added four goals and Buonocore earned a three-goal hat trick. Two nights earlier at Alibrandi Stadium, CBA met Cicero-North Syracuse, from the Class A ranks. After a shaky start, the Brothers took over in the second half and beat the Northstars 18-9. Both sides did what it wanted on the offensive end early, and CBA only led 8-6 at the break. Gradually, though, the Brothers, by pushing the pace, wore the thinner CNS roster down and produced a late surge. Katie Webster had a role in half of CBA’s scoring plays, with six assists to go with her three goals. Often, those passes went toPoplawski, who had six goals, and Gait, who scored four times. Racciatti added two goals as Caroline Webster and Laura Bulman each got a pair of assists.
