Venturing outside of league play, the Marcellus softball team met Auburn Tuesday and went to eight innings as both teams reached double digits on the board — but the Maroons prevailed by a score of 13-11. Marcellus took two different leads, at 4-1 and 6-5. Both times, Auburn came back, tying it at 4-4, then using five runs in the top of the sixth (four of them from Ali VanGiesen’s grand slam) to seize a 10-6 advantage. And it stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh, when the Mustangs made a stirring comeback, getting to VanGiesen for four runs to tie it, 10-10, and force extra frames. Auburn somehow regrouped and, in the top of the eighth, scored three times. Van Giesen’s two-run single was the key blow, as she improved to six RBIs and, despite allowing a run in the bottom of the eighth, closed out the win. Sophie Jackson led Marcellus with four hits, including two doubles, and earned three RBIs. Tabby McBride tripled and drove in a run, with Bailey Donovan, Tabby McBride, Kassie Lema, Caitlin Henderson and Molly MacLachlan (who pitched all eight innings) earning one RBI apiece. Jordan-Elbridge also went outside league play — and routed Port Byron 17-5, scoring five runs in the third inning and six runs in the top of the seventh to build most of its margin. Liz Caspari had a home run, double, two runs scored and three RBIs. Lindsy Geery added three hits, including a double, and scored four runs, as did Ashleigh Hart.
