In separate locales, the Cicero-North Syracuse softball and baseball teams both made comebacks to get key wins over Central Square on Monday. Though many of Section III’s top softball teams (including Liverpool) head to warmer climes for spring break, CNS stayed in the area and was in trouble at Central Square before a severe turnaround led to a 14-4 victory over the Red Hawks. CNS simply couldn’t produce much against Central Square pitcher Ashley Sabourin and, in the top of the sixth inning, found itself trailing 3-0, on the brink of a severe disappointment. Not panicking, the Northstars went to work in that frame, not stopping until it got five runs to take the lead. o Central Square cut it to 5-4, but that was only temporary. CNS lit into Sabourin during a nine-run seventh inning that turned a tense contest into a rout. On its way to 11 hits, CNS saw Jenn Huff, Jenna Perry and Kaitlyn Shepard each earn two RBIs, while Brittany Paul and Amy Van Hoven also drove in runs. Sarah Salamone again took over in the middle of the game for Sydney O’Hara and picked up the win. Back at Gillette Field, the CNS baseball team, in its first outing since the April 15 loss to Baldwinsville, the Northstars took a while to crank up – but did so, and beat Central Square 9-3. The Red Hawks took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning, but that was all the hosts would allow as Joe Pokrentowski, who earned the win, and Austin Hyde combined to blank Central Square the rest of the way and only allow six total hits. CNS was still down, 3-1, when it used five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take charge and chase Red Hawks pitcher Joey Battaglia. Cory Burrows and Blake Monday (whose grand slam helped beat Auburn a week earlier) both finished with two RBIs, while Rob Quinn doubled and drove in a run. John Howell also had an RBI.
