In the brief span of four days, the Skaneateles baseball team saw both ends of the OHSL Liberty division, with appropriate results. At the high end is Bishop Ludden — and specifically, pitching ace Matt Pirro, whom the Lakers saw, up-close on Thursday afternoon during a 4-0 defeat. For the most part, Skaneateles pitcher Nolan Cunningham did a solid job against the potent Ludden hitters, limiting them to seven hits and two-run rallies in the first and third innings. Yet Pirro didn’t need much help. In fact, the Lakers did not even get a baserunner until the sixth innings as Pirro maintained a perfect game through five frames. Ultimately, Skaneateles got two hits, but nothing more as Pirro struck out 10 without a walk. Skaneateles prepared for Ludden with a strong effort in last Monday’s trip to Hannibal, where a big first inning gave the Lakers all it needed for a 10-4 victory over the Warriors. Hannibal pitcher Aaron Vincent never made it out of that first inning s Skaneateles batted around and finished with seven runs, mostly set up by six walks. Eight different Lakers scored runs by game’s end — and the one that didn’t, Brandon Barron, earned two RBIs. Cunnningham, Pat Roberts, Jared Amory, Zach Augustine and Jake Carvalho each drove in one run. On the pitching side, Augustine went most of the way, earning the win as Amory appeared in relief. Skaneateles won despite having just a 9-8 advantage in hits, the walks causing most of the damage. The Lakers play Tully and Onondaga during the spring-break week before facing rival Marcellus on Saturday afternoon.
