Chittenango’s girls track and field team came within a few points of sweeping Homer and Fowler in last Wednesday’s OHSL Freedom division opener. The Bears did beat the Falcons 97-43, but dropped a close 72-68 decision to the Trojans, despite a handful of strong individual efforts. Courtney Dyer won the 100-meter dash in 12.9 seconds, then took the 200-meter dash in 27.2 seconds and helped Meredith Furtado, Theresa Parascondola and Alyssa Giarosso win the 4×100 relay in 54.8 seconds. Elsewhere, in field events, Brittney Tirabassi won the pole vault, clearing 7 feet, while Alyssa Endres took the discus (81 feet 4 1/2 inches) and Katrina Karbowniczak prevailed in the high jump, clearing 4 feet 8 inches. To lead Homer, Bori Toszer won the 800 and 1,500-meter runs and helped the Trojans take the 4×800 relay, too. On the boys side, Chittenango would lose to both Fowler (76-65) and Homer (91.5-49.5), but still claim some individual events. John Durfee ran to first place in the mile in 4:57.1 as John LaPlante ran 3,200-meters in 11:03 to win there. Durfee, Bill Buck, Tyler Howd and Kevin Carr helped the Bears win the 4×800 relay in 9:03.3. Bruce Gondeck claimed first in the high jump by clearing 5 feet 8 inches. Homer would sweep here, too, as Andrew Gregg won the 200, 110 hurdles, 400 hurdles and 4×100 relay. Meanwhile, Canastota’s girls track team took a 121-19 loss to powerful Sauquoit Valley, only getting wins when Allison Lasnicki took the 1,500-meter run (5:05.8) and 3,000-meter run (10:26.1).
