All sports win streaks eventually end — and the Baldwinsville boys track and field team was all too happy to be the one to halt Cicero-North Syracuse’s long romp through the CNY Counties League National division. Going into last Wednesday’s meet at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium, the Northstars had won 22 straight league contests. But it would not get to 23. Excelling at both sprints and distance events, the Bees overcame CNS’s strength in field events and ended the Northstars’ reign, at least for the moment, winning by a score of 76-65. All this got launched in the 4×800 relay, where Josh Perez, Brian Wisely, Alex Peinkofer and Charles Parker tore to a time of eight minutes, 32.7 seconds. Then Rudy Sapp began to take over in the sprints. He edged Antonio Peck at the 100-meter dash, though both finished in 11.1 seconds, and in the 200-meter dash Sapp edged out a CNS sprinter at the wire in 23.9 seconds. Andrew Hoover also had two wins. He claimed the 110 high hurdles (15.7 seconds) and needed just 1:00.2 to earn a victory in the 400-meter hurdles, and he also joined Wisely, Charles Parker and Ethan Pacheck to win the 4×400 relay in 3:39.9. And to complete a relay sweep, Sapp, Peck, Parker Kiff and Alex Nagy navigated the 4×100 in 45.9 seconds. Brian Kane continued to dominate the high jump, clearing 6 feet 4 inches, while Nate McCabe held off CNS’s Jared Walther to take the 800-meter run in 2:03.9. McCabe (4:28.4) and Pacheck (4:31.4) were second and third, respectively, in the mile. At the same time, the B’ville girls track team lost to CNS 115-26, unable to win any individual events or relays. Jasmine Thompson led the Northstars with wins in four events — the 100 hurdles, long jump, triple jump and high jump. All this came before B’ville hosted the John Arcaro Memorial Relays on Saturday, where, in a rematch with CNS in cold, wet conditions, the Northstars would prevail and win the team title, 115 points to the Bees’ 106. Still, B’ville had a fair share of winning efforts. McCabe, Parker and the Pacheck brothers needed 10:50.2 to pull away from the field and take the distance medley relay, while it also prevailed in the 3,000 steeplechase (20:42.4) as Shaun Thompson won the individual race in 9:56.7. B’ville also was victorious in the 4×800 relay, its time of 8:48.5 far ahead of runner-up Hannibal (9:07.2), while Hoover and Hingre won the 400 hurdles in a combined 2:04.4. In the 4×400 relay, B’ville was second in 3:43.4, and it also took second in the discus (combined 217 feet 11 inches) as it also was runner-up in the 25-pound weight event with 77 feet 9 inches, just one foot behind Mexico. Kane could only clear 6 feet in the high jump as the Bees again had a second (11 feet), two inches behind CNS. B’ville was also third in the 110 high hurdles (35.7 seconds), 4×200 (1:39.8) and 4×1,600 (19:23.2), plus got fourth in the sprint medley and triple jump. To top it off, B’ville had fifth-place efforts in the shot put, long jump, 4×100 and extended sprint medley.
