Each of the local softball teams played on Monday afternoon, and three of them earned wins.
West Genesee shut out Rome Free Academy 6-0, just as Westhill outscored Marcellus 12-6 and Bishop Ludden blanked Onondaga 8-1. Solvay lost to Phoenix 8-4. Ten long days after a season-opening win over Westhill, the Wildcats returned last Monday and were both stingy and productive against RFA. Ashley Amidon pitched most of the way, giving way late to Ashley D’Avirro as the pair combined to allow just four hits and keep the Black Knights off the board. A pair of first-inning runs put WG in front for good as it scored in four of six innings. Kailey Ritch doubled twice and earned two RBIs as Katie Regin also got two doubles. D’Avirro, Rachel Hayden and Mackenzie Glynn joined Regin, driving in one run apiece. A late stumble did little to disguise the good work Westhill did early against Marcellus. Four different times, the Warriors produced multiple runs in an inning — the first, third, fourth and sixth — as it never trailed and strung together 15 hits. Kelly Mascari, with two doubles and three RBIs, led the way as Kelley Noonan drove in two runs. Tony Secreti, aside from her pitching duties, tripled as Carrie Griffo, Courtney Morgan, Nicole Toth and Andi Golembiewski earned one RBI apiece. All those runs meant that Secreti could rest her pitching arm, which she did after four innings. Mascari was effective in relief until the seventh, when the Mustangs got five runs, forcing Griffo in to close things out. Linda Annan, Bailey Donovan, Molly MacLachlan and Sophie Jackson each had RBIs for Marcellus. Ludden’s softball team continued to roar through its early schedule at Onondaga. The Gaelic Knights scored twice in the third inning to pull in front, then added four runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth. Korey Kibling, who pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts, double and earned two RBIs, while Grace Rooney and Kayla Kibling also drove in runs. When Solvay met Phoenix, all the damage took place in the middle stages. Phoenix got two runs off Gabrielle Nurod in the bottom of the third to break a 0-0 deadlock, then erupted for six runs an inning later as Kayleigh Troia, with three RBIs, led the hosts. Not quitting, the Bearcats ate away at that margin in the late going as Breezy Rigall and Nicole Groth both earned RBIs, but Phoenix held on.
